From all type of algae, Dunaliella salina is an important one that able to produces β-carotene in high amounts, up to 12% of
dry matter. It is the most important
species of algae for the production of β-carotene, however, other pigments and
compounds like lutein, chlorophyll, glycerol, and polyunsaturated fatty acids
are also produced by these, making the genus one of the most important for
commercial production. Due to a large
content of the Highest Natural
Betacarotene, Dunaliella attractive
to biotechnologists for large-scale production in high-salt,
nitrogen-deficient, inorganic media in shallow, open ponds under high solar
radiation. It is marketed in various forms such as extracts, powder for human
use, and dried Dunaliella for feed coloration.
